November 2000 -- Getting Back in the Gym
With  Bill Morrison of Heavy Sports.com

Nov 1/2000My first workout in the gym on November 1st. My First Workout

Here in Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada, we don't play raquetball, we play Squash! A fast paced game with a smaller rubber ball, and longer raquet than raquetball.Nov 1--I've been going to therapy on my injured elbow for about 6 months, so I wasn't totally out of shape when I stepped in to the local gym for the first time in a year. I played an hour of squash, then hit the weights for a quick workout to see where I'm at.

I was surprised that I was still able to bench press 225lbs for 8 reps fairly easily although the bar felt awkward after not benching for so long, other than a few sets on the universal gym during therapy. I have this theory called the "big plate theory" that I always use so didn't go any heavier. My "big plate theory" is only using the big 45lb plates on weight increments until I can bench 315 again, then I will use smaller plates when I get to that level since I've never done 405(3 plates aside). Even if I can't quite do 3 plates(315lbs) when I'm making one of my many comebacks, I will do a negative, and am usually doing 315 easily within a few weeks of starting working out. I hope to be there by the 1st of December.

Nov 13--
I've gotten over most of the really painful soreness, and have my workouts structured like this: Workout 1- Chest and Triceps, Workout 2- Legs and Biceps, Workout 3-- Back and shoulders. I do each workout once a week, as I find I overtrain really easily, and I try to keep my workout intense at 45mins to 1 hour.

Its seems like I reinjured my elbow, as it has been really swollen and sore, but I'm trying to work around it by watching the angles I move or rotate my hands and arm while doing lifting or pulling movements. My therapist thinks that I may have possibly injured the ligament as the joint seemed loose today when she checked it. Oh well... No more excuses, remember?

My weight seems to be bouncing between 207 and 210 lbs even though I've been loading up on protein and carbs and just about anything I can eat including alot of left over halloween candy. I think my crohns disease may be a contributing factor to why I'm not gaining any weight, but I'm starting creatine monohydrate and protein powder next week, so hopefully I'll be up to my goal of 215lbs by December 1st.

Nov 16
Had a great chest and triceps workout today. After a couple of warm-up sets, I benched 275 lbs easily. I went for 315, but was a little shy. My triceps seem to be the weak link in my bench press right now, but with the sore elbow, I'm taking it slower than I normally would to avoid a worst injury.

I've started drinking a lot more water, and my weight is now up to 213lbs!!

Nov 24
I tried benching 315 again a couple days ago, but still to no avail.... I did a couple of negatives with 340, and my chest feels like it's torn to pieces! Excellent, as "Pain is only weakness leaving the body!" As long as it's good ol' muscle pain, not joint, tendon or ligament damage.

I've been using a new squat machine our gym has and have been repping out with 400lbs.

Nov 27th
I shoulder pressed the 90 lb. dumbbells today, and was really happy with the strength I'm gaining in the pushing movements. I've pressed the 120's for 4 reps once, and hope to be up to that level by January.

Nov 29th
Benched 315 today!!! Blasted it easily off my chest for the first 8 to 10 inches, then struggled with the triceps which are still really weak, but managed to slowly lock it out. It took so much out of me, I couldn't finish my chest/triceps workout.

Although I didn't quite meet all my goals for the month, I was fairly close. I managed to put on 6lbs, although from the small increase in measurements I don't know where the weight went, as I actually look leaner now than a month ago. I still haven't bought any creatine or protein yet, so will hopefully gain some more size and strength with it.

I also believe that when you start back in the gym, the strength comes back first with the size following (hopefully a short time later!).
