Getting Back in the Gym--December 2000- A documentary
-- By Bill Morrison-- Heavy Sports.com President

Dec 1/2000
I think things will be a lot easier this month, as I was sore the entire month of November. I kept reminding myself that "Pain is only weakness leaving the body", but man, I must have had a lot of weakness to get rid of...

My goals for the end of the month are going to be  realistic. I know that with the holiday season approaching, I will be spending a a lot of time with family and friends around my hectic work schedule, but will still try to get in the gym as much as possible throughout the holidays, although I've found that I'm a big slacker around this time in the past.

I've also decided to throw the leaner approach out the window for the time being and focus on gaining as much strength as possible. I noticed my strength gains seem to be a lot better when I weigh closer to 230lbs, and I hope to be up to 220lbs by the end of the month.

I called up my friend Brock Madill of Physique Factory (Brock is 1999 Mr. Natural Canada and won the 2000 Natural Musclemania Championship), and bought 600mg of creatine and 5lbs of whey protein. This is my first time using whey protein. I'm a firm believer that you can get most of the nutrients you need through proper nutrition, but I don't follow my diet close enough to ensure that I get the 1g of protein per lb of bodyweight I need to build muscle. I've also found that I get a placebo like effect just knowing that I'm taking a supplement and I seem to push myself harder during my workouts.

December 4/2000

Killer workout today.... Back and Shoulders. I managed to do two sets of shoulder presses with the 100lb dumbells, so my strength is starting to really come back now. Thank you muscle memory!!

Dec 6th 2000. I don't look a whole lot bigger than the pic a month earlier, but my weight is up about 7lbs at this point. Too bad I don't have "eye opener" software!!December 6/2000

My shoulders were killing me today, but I still managed to bench 315lbs for 2 reps, but couldn't pull off 340lbs, although I was fairly close. A couple more weeks hopefully! My triceps have been getting alot stronger mostly due to a reverse grip bench press a guy at the gym showed me. I've never did them before, but they are now my favourite exercise.

At this point my workout partner of 14 off and on years, Ken Faragher(2-time Canadian Armwrestling Champion) and I have been doing a lot of pauses after doing our heavier sets of chest and triceps. For example, our last barbell bench set consists of 225 held an inch off the chest for the count of 8, then the count of 7 next rep, and so on. I find these really fatigue me, and I've used pauses in the past to get me past sticking points. They also work great with the reverse grip triceps bench press. And talk about a PUMP!!
This Pic taken December 6th. Obviously not any "eye popping" differences, but I am  starting to get into a bit better shape.

One thing that helps me keep my goals is the intensity of my training. Ken and I have a mutual agreement that when we think the other can do one more rep even after a really tough rep, we won't let the other person rack the bar. It sucks at the time when you're doing a dreadfully tough forced rep, but it's worth it in the long run. We also try to go heavier with each workout even if we're still a little sore from the workout before, although we both know the signs of over training and avoid it. Always have a good spotter when lifting heavy, and it's especially helpful when they get a feel for how you like to train. Ken and I both try to make each other do exercises the other hates, and push each other to the limit with every single workout.

Dec. 15

Wow, I've been really busy the last week or so, and only managed to make it to the gym twice. Heavy Sports.com sales for Christmas have kept my wife and I really busy filling orders, and I have been working 48 hours a week at my other job, as well as attending meetings as a new town councillor, and trying to figure out how to wire the house I'm building.

I also had the flu for a few days, causing my weight to drop down from 219 to 213... pretty depressing. But the good news is that yesterday I bench pressed 315 for 3 reps. The triceps are still the weak point as I did negatives with 370 last week and could push the weight off my chest, but the triceps were non-existent after 4 inches off my chest.

I haven't mentioned much about leg workouts, mostly because I haven't been working them very heavy as my lower back has been bothering me quite a bit. I'm taking x-rays tomorrow to find out how bad the problem is, but it seems one of the joints is trying to fuse itself due to a break-down in the cartilage caused from a form of osteo-arthritus involved with Crohns Disease. The joint isn't that functional anyway, so I hope it fuses itself quick!

Dec 19th
Ok, Ok, I did a heavy leg workout..... Not squats, but with a great new free weight squat machine that you actually stand up in and do the movement exactly like squatting. Easier on my back, and putting 5 plates/side is great for the ego. Also did biceps, which by the way are up to 16.5 inches unpumped. I'm at the point now that I really seem to "blow up" when I have a good pump, but I keep forgetting to bring a tape measure to the gym with me. I'm tipping the scales at 217lbs today, but have been so busy, I've forgotten to take any creatine or protein in 4 days.

Dec 23rd
I haven't did a chest/tricep or shoulder/back workout in well over a week, so I figured after X-mas shopping I'd stop in and do a quick workout with a couple sets for each of these bodyparts, as the gym will be closed for a few days. The  week of rest did wonders, as my bench was 315 x3 , 325 x3, then 345 x 1 EASILY!!! I thought of trying it for 2 or 3 reps, but have a Xmas party tonight, and didn't want to look like I'm cringing every time I try to raise my beer. Could 400 be just around the corner? I'm shooting for early February...

Best wishes to everyone on the holidays!!
