Getting
Back in the Gym
November 2000 December 2000 Jan/Feb 2001 March-May
My training was pretty regular up until six years ago(1994) when I was 23 yrs old. I was starting a new family, working long hours, and with all the other extra-curricular activities I enjoy, I found that my gym time was getting cut down to about four months a year. A couple of years ago, at 27, I was hoping to make a serious weight-lifting comeback with a hardcore powerlifting training regimen then was struck with Crohns Disease that left me unable to train for a year and a half; then in October 1999 I got back into training for less than two months when I had to undergo reconstructive surgery in Dec. 99 on a torn ligament in my right elbow, that left me unable to work with heavy weights up until now. Now I'm ready to throw all the excuses out the window and get into the best shape of my life! Seven years ago, I almost bench pressed 400 lbs(398 to be exact), and have always been able to bring myself back up close to that level after a little time in the gym. It has been over 3 years since I was at that level, or even lifted longer than two months consecutively. I was never big on training legs other than the odd set thrown in as I was a competitive arm wrestler (hence the elbow injury), and wanted my upper body as strong as possible while keeping my body weight down, to compete in a lighter weight class. Doing legs would put my weight up to around 240 lbs, and sans-legs would keep me at around 227lbs. This time around, I'm not going to neglect my legs, and hope to be able to successfully compete in a natural power lifting meet sometime in 2001. I hope to have my bench press in the 450lb range by mid 2001, my squat at 600 and my deadlift at 550, at a bodyweight of 242lbs or 110kg. Nothing spectacular by any serious powerlifting standards, but hey, I just took three years off!!! Each month or so for the next year I will be documenting my progress on this site, including next month's goals, and hopefully reporting on setting new personal records. Although my focus is going to be more towards powerlifting, and hopefully a return to competitive armwrestling, I will be keeping track of my body measurements as I'm nearing 30 and want to look good too! I found some old stats from 1993 when I was in my best shape to compare with my stats today, to see how far I have to go.
As I came up with the idea for this online documentary, my friend Tony Evans(owner of PC-4U-www.pc4u.com) came up with a great slogan for my documentary and lifetime quest to gain strength as well as for product packaging for our products. Heavy Sports.com-- "Live Strong"!! Heavy Sports.com is usually known as the "Online Home of Strength Athletes", but "Live Strong" has a catchy ring to it that all our strength training readers can associate with. Even though there are many others like me that get too busy to consistently train week-after-week, year-after-year, we always find ourselves migrating back to the gym in our quest to live stronger lives by improving our physique with resistance training. It is this quest to Live Strong that helps improve the lives of not only athletes, but anyone who does a simple push-up or sit-up to better their physique. I look forward to the months ahead of incredible muscle soreness
and hopefully some great muscle gains! I hope that many of you will follow me on
